A 1983 protocol let rival instrument makers speak one language
The MIDI Association's own specification pages date and describe the shared message format that made instruments from competing makers interoperable.

What happened
In 1983, a group of competing electronic instrument manufacturers published a shared specification for exchanging musical control data between their machines. The MIDI Association's specifications page states plainly that 'MIDI 1.0 was first published in 1983, the outcome of collaboration between various manufacturers.' Before that, a synthesiser from one company generally could not talk to a sequencer or keyboard from another. MIDI defined a common message format for notes, timing, program changes and control data, carried at first over 5-pin DIN cables between machines.
What the documents say
The detailed specification now hosted by the Association describes the 'core layout of all MIDI 1.0 messages': channel voice messages, system messages, and universal system exclusive extensions added between 1983 and 1996. The document is explicit that the format's purpose was interoperability, built to 'exchange information...between different musical instruments or other devices such as sequencers, computers, lighting controllers, mixers'. A second living document, the Association's MIDI 2.0 page, describes a later extension that 'does not replace MIDI 1.0 but builds on the core principles, architecture, and semantics' of the original, adding higher-resolution control and per-note expression. The same page states that implementers 'must have a thorough understanding of MIDI 1.0' before any MIDI 2.0 feature applies. Read together, the documents describe a protocol built to be extended rather than replaced.
Why it matters for makers
Every plugin instrument, DAW automation lane, hardware controller and generative-music tool that receives a note or a control message today is still speaking a dialect of the format standardised in 1983. The practical consequence is portability: a performance recorded as MIDI data is not locked to the synthesiser that played it. It can be re-voiced, re-arranged, or handed to a different instrument, including a generative model, without re-recording audio. That separation of performance data from sound source is the mechanism that makes sample libraries, virtual instruments and score-following software interchangeable in a way raw audio never was.
What to check before you use it
Because MIDI 2.0 is additive rather than a replacement, a maker working across old and new gear can usefully confirm which protocol a device or plugin actually negotiates before assuming extended resolution or per-note control is available. This is an editorial reading of the specification's own stated dependency, not a claim about any specific product's compliance.
- Does this device or plugin declare MIDI 1.0, MIDI 2.0, or both, and does it fall back gracefully?
- Is the control data I am relying on, such as a velocity curve, part of the base specification or a manufacturer-specific extension?
- If I hand a MIDI file to a generative tool, what part of the original performance actually survives the format?
A protocol is not a sound. MIDI's contribution was to make control data a shared, portable layer, separate from whatever instrument renders it, and that separation is still the plumbing under most of the tools this site covers.
