What happened
The composer David Cope describes, in his own words on an archived page from his University of California, Santa Cruz site, starting a program called Experiments in Musical Intelligence in 1981 "as the result of a composer's block". He wanted software that could track his own musical style closely enough to suggest a next note or measure. When that proved too hard to specify directly, he built a system that instead learned from a database of existing music. Decades later he built a successor, Emily Howell, a program he describes as using only the output of the earlier system "as a source database for its musical choices", releasing full orchestral and chamber works under that name.
What the documents say
Cope's own account names the mechanism: deconstruction (breaking existing works into parts), signature extraction (identifying what makes a passage recognisably in a given style) and recombinancy (reassembling those parts into new, stylistically consistent sequences). He is explicit this is recombination of analysed material, not free composition by rule, comparing it to how written language recombines a fixed alphabet. His Emily Howell page adds that the successor program was "created... during the 1990s" and lists six numbered works, describing the earlier system's catalogue as the only training material Emily Howell draws on. A third archived biography page confirms Cope's own career details: born in San Francisco on 17 May 1941 and, at the time of writing, Dickerson Emeriti Professor at UC Santa Cruz. Neither page names a chart outcome.
Why it matters for makers
Cope's own description of reception is the useful part for anyone facing today's arguments about AI music: audiences "have delighted, angered, provoked, and terrified" on hearing computer-composed work in classical styles, decades before a neural network produced comparable controversy. The mechanism, recombination of analysed existing material rather than generation from nothing, is also a direct ancestor of what a modern model does at far larger scale. Recognising that the argument over whether recombined material can be "real" composition long predates deep learning helps separate the technical novelty of today's tools from the older question of what counts as authorship.
What to check before you use it
A maker reading Cope's account should treat it as one composer's first-person history, not a technical specification; he directs readers to his own books, Computer Models of Musical Creativity among them. Before citing Cope's systems as precedent for a modern tool, check what is being claimed: recombination of one person's own catalogue is a different rights situation from a model trained on other people's commercial recordings without consent. This is an editorial distinction, not one either page draws explicitly.

- Whose catalogue trained the system, the composer's own or someone else's?
- Does the reaction being predicted rest on the technology itself or on the older, recurring argument about recombination and authorship?
Cope's pages matter less as a technical manual than as a record that this argument is old. A composer wrote his own recombination software in 1981 and lived through the same cycle of delight, anger and provocation that generative music produces today.
